This article discusses how school should be an atmosphere where kids can come and learn without worrying about being in danger. Many kids go to school on a daily basis worried about being bullied. The article quotes Obama stating, “The opportunity to learn and grow and achieve their potential without having to worry about the constant threat of harassment." Educational officials are trying to put an end to bullying and harassment happening in schools. The federal education department set up workshops for teachers, administrators and the White House would also hold a conference to prevent bullying.
This article was helpful to me. One statement that really stuck out was when it stated that education officials were trying to get rid of the idea that bullying is just a part of growing up. Many students show warning signs that they are being bullied, one really obvious sign is fear of school. This article is important because it is telling that officials are really putting their foot down and making the consequences for bullying more severe.
This article was about a 16 year old girl, Felicia Garcia from Staten Island, that was showing signs of being bullied which resulted in her committing suicide. The night before committing suicide she had posted a tweet on the social networking site Twitter, which stated “I can’t, I’m done, I give up.” After school the next day Felicia went to the Staten Island Railway Station and waited for a train to come. Once she saw it coming, she threw herself into the tracks and was pronounced dead that evening. Some said she was teased because she had piercings and lived in foster care. Others had spread sexual boasts about her.
This article was helpful because it gave a prime example of a time that someone was being bullied and didn’t show many warning signs but was so depressed that they took their own life. Many kids that are bullied, will show signs that they are being bullied but some times they will not. A lot of times, they do not want their family and friends to know they are being bullied or are embarrassed by it and try to hide it. After hiding feelings that one feels from being bullied for so long, it can result in something as horrible as suicide or lashing out at others. This is why it is important for parents and friends of a possible bully victim to notice the signs that can save their child or friends life.
This article explains how parents and school officials should become more aware and involved with the issue of bullying. If a teacher knows or suspects that there is bullying happening in the classroom, it is important for them to take initiative to talk with the bully and the bully victim to prevent this from being a reoccurring issue. The typical warning signs of the victim are that they are anxious and insecure. They are often afraid of getting the bully into trouble. A lot of times, the bully victim urges their parents and teachers not to contact the parents of the bully.
This article was helpful because it explains another warning sign that someone is being bullied is when they try and avoid having an adult/authority figure contact the bullies parents regarding the issue. Bully victims fear that if they “tattle-tail” on the bully that they will be bullied even more instead of putting it to an end. They feel that if they sweep it under the rug that the problem will eventually go away and that taking action will cause more harm.
This article discusses that warning signs of being bullied can a lot of times be identified as depression. Often times, kids who are being bullied are depressed and the parents don’t know the real reason behind it. A lot of times they will think it that their child has a negative attitude toward school that is the reason they do not want to go. Parents should be aware that depression can be disguised as the wrong problem and to look for the signs coming from their child.
This article helped me because I never really thought of bullying being disguised as something else. I always thought that bullying was pretty straight forward and that it has always been a problem in schools and other types of atmospheres. I think this article was important because it tells parents that if their child shows any signs of depression, the reason for it could be bullying and that they should further look into the problem.
This website gives a list of the warning signs for a child that is a victim of bullying. A lot of times, parents don’t know or are not aware that their child is being bullied. It also discusses helpful tips to use on how to approach your child about the issue or just in general what first steps you should take to make sure your child is safe at school. Not only is bullying done in school, it is done over the internet, and in the workplace and can create a very hostile atmosphere for the victim.
This website was helpful because it gives a list of the warning signs for a child that is a victim of bullying. Bullying is becoming more and more common among schools and with the increasing amount of technology, the number of children being bullied is increasing.
